Malahide Musical and Dramatic Society News

Malahide Musical and Dramatic Society would like to express a huge thank you to everyone that participated in and supported their recent fundraiser Malahide's Got Talent.

The competition was held over four nights from Thursday, 10th November 2011 until Sunday, 13th November 2011 inclusive. The first three nights were held in Malahide Rugby Club with the top acts, as voted for by a combination of audience votes and judges votes, qualifying for the Grand Final which was held on Sunday, 13th November 2011 in the 4* Grand Hotel.

The range of talent on display was tremendous - from Irish dancers to hip hop dancers, singers, rappers, musicians, the list goes on!

They are delighted to announce the winners of Malahide's Got Talent 2011 were local band Fret 13 comprised of Seán Dolan, David McIntyre and Ben Lawless. The band impressed the judges with their stage presence as they sang and played Blink 182's 'All the Small Things'. As well as being crowned overall winners, they took home the top prize of €500. In second place, and winners of €200, were girl group The Copycats which consisted of Emma Woodhead, Emma O'Reilly and Megan O'Shea who impressed the judges with their rendition of Maroon 5's  recent hit 'Misery'. The girls sang and danced their way to second place. In third place, was Aoife O'Connor who gave the audience a beautiful performance of film classic, 'My Heart will Go On' made famous by Celine Dion. Aoife was thrilled to take home €100.

A great night was had by all and thank you to everyone that helped out both in front of house and behind the scenes. The funds raised from this competition will go towards staging Malahide Musical and Dramatic Society 's next production, Sweeney Todd - The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, which will be held in Scoil Iosa Hall from 14th February 2012 until 18th February 2012. Rehearsals for this musical are in full swing under the direction of Lynda O'Neill, Musical Director Andrew J. Linnie and Choreographer Michelle O'Hara. Both cast and crew are all very excited about this one.

Finally, keep an eye out for M.M.D.S. over the next few weekends as they take to the streets of Malahide carol singing!

White Collar Boxing Sponsorship

Malahide Gardai turn a blind eye to 16 fights in one night!
.........whilst over 1,146 people have already bought ring side seats for Friday, 23rd September 2011 at The Wright Venue, Swords which is hosting the first ever Malahide White Collar Boxing Event featuring 32 “crash course trained” fighters, all putting their noses on the line for the charitable benefit of Malahide Rugby Club, St. Francis Hospice, the Irish Cancer Society and Remember Us.
16 of the fighters, led by Captain Ben O’Connor, hail from the recently formed Under 19’s dream team, now evolving into the Rugby Academy for Under 20’s at MRFC.
The other 16 are an eclectic mix of mature danger seekers including the likes of Barry Gibney who needs no introduction, as well as Bon Appetit Celebrity Chef Ollie Dunne and his brother Alan.
Ray Nolan, the serial dot.com entrepreneur and Billy Kelly are compromising their dignity for Irish Cancer and Remember Us, respectively. Malahide Tennis Clubs hopes ride on the speedy Glenn Troy whilst St Sylvester’s GAA club’s pride hangs on the shoulders of the still athletic Seamie Hynes, stalworth Declan Barnes, and the legendary player, Donal McCarthy. The Golf Club is represented by the shy and retiring Cormac O’Connor, expected to arrive in a shirt and tie.
50-year-old veteran rugby star John O’Connell (AKA Camy) is not sure why he volunteered but he did! ....and Mannix Smith of previous rugby glory is also flying the rugby flag.
Mark Devoy represents all the hopes of the gym bunnies at his MU Gym and Richford Mtrs are throwing Richie Molloy into the Lion’s Den, in the name of charity.
Gareth Downey is flying the Wright’s flag solo, as the enigmatic Michael Wright has had to retire early owing to injury. Two other injuries compelling early exit have also plagued Java Republic’s serial iron man, Dave McKernan, and April Flowers magnet Eddie Duffy.
Bank of Ireland are sacrificing Malahide’s Brian Murphy and Fingal County Council are in the very safe hands of Eoghan O’Brien !
The event kicks off at 7pm on the night. People interested in attending should buy their tickets, costing just €20, now, because once it sells out to capacity (circa 2,000), the doors will have to close on what promises to be a gruesome spectacle of unprecedented entertainment!
Tickets are available from Gibney’s Off-Licence. For more details, please contact Darren on 0861042942.

The next Green Village Malahide Information Meeting shall take place in Malahide Library on Tuesday, 13th September 2011 from 6:30pm until 7:30pm.

The Fingal County Council Growing Places initiative has developed from the twin ambitions of creating a more diverse range of open space environments and the need to match available resources with competing demands.

4 - Improving the quality of active recreation facilities;
5 - Liaising with Residents Groups about the detailed implementation of the ini-tiative.

Kevin Halpenny from Fingal County Council shall kindly be giving a short guest presentation on the Growing Spaces initiative and providing answers to that key question, 'So why the long grass?'
