Malahide 2010 Brochure / Directory

Thank you to the thirty plus people who attended the pre-Christmas social event in Gibney's last week. We took that opportunity to do a little networking and to launch the Malahide Directory. The Directory has been delivered to 8000 Malahide homes and will soon also be available through local businesses. Supporting local business has been our theme at the end of 2009 and I hope that we can successfully develop it into 2010.On behalf of all the Chamber Committee members I wish you and yours a very happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

Malahide Village Christmas Lights Go Green!

In a difficult year for everyone, the Malahide Chamber felt it important to ensure the Village entered the festive season in good spirits. Despite the economy they decided to push ahead with the annual lighting of the Village which adds to the atmosphere and special Village feel of Malahide. However, the Chamber also undertook to both reduce the cost by 30% and to re-equip the town with low energy lighting that will use just 10% of the previous electricity consumed.

The project was lead by local businessman Gerry Walsh of Iridium Ventures. To bring down the cost volunteers were sought to put up the lights and in November, twenty volunteers climbed ladders, strung lights and operated the Cherry picker to get everything in place for the Christmas. Local companies such as IT Rollout and REW electrical suppliers contributed personnel and material to complete the project on time and in budget.

Local Malahide businesses along with Fingal County Council and the Malahide Forum fund this project. Malahide ends the year with a project that involved all the community in a positive effort to bring new light to the town.

VIADUCT ON SCHEDULE FOR NOVEMBER REOPENING

Iarnród Éireann has said that excellent progress is being made in the reinstatement of the Malahide Viaduct, with the line on schedule to be reopened, with full services resuming, before the end of November.
Already, major phases of the works are well advanced, including:
- the reinstatement of the weir, the erosion of which lead to the Viaduct accident, is well advanced
- the 4th pier has been reinstated, with new pre-stressed concrete beams now being placed into position: these will shortly be topped with the concrete bridge deck, which is in situ
- reinforcement of the other piers on the Viaduct through piling is underway
When structural work is complete, the track infrastructure will then be reinstated to allow for resumption of rail services.
A spokesperson for Iarnród Éireann said “we are delighted with the speedy progress in the reinstatement works. This is a credit to our own teams and our contractors working on the project, and we very much look forward to the resumption of full Northern line commuter and Belfast Enterprise services before the end of November.”
“We have ensured the project has taken advantage of expert opinion, in the areas of hydraulics and environmental issues, soil mechanics, and scour prevention, and designs have been independently assessed by consulting engineers, and the Railway Safety Commission.”
The reinstatement project represents an investment of €4 million, under Iarnród Éireann’s Rail Safety Investment programme.
A further significant issue in the reinstatement is the protection of the unique eco-system at the Estuary. The works are designed to leave the water level and flow rates unaffected. To this end, the services of the Hydrology section of Dept. of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University College Cork, have been engaged to provide expert advice. Computational and physical models are designed to simulate the original conditions and the effect that the works will have on the wider estuary. UCC are also advising in regard to the environmental and ecological effects of these works.

The Malahide Viaduct accident occurred on the evening of Friday 21st August, when sea-bed erosion caused the 4th pier on the viaduct to collapse. Iarnród Éireann’s investigation into the accident is continuing, as is that of the Rail Accident Investigation Unit of the Department of Transport.

Alternative services have been operated since the accident for commuters who use the line. These arrangements include:
- Revised Belfast Enterprise timetable, with bus transfers between Drogheda and Dublin
- Express bus services from Drogheda for Northern line commuters, with Dundalk, Laytown and Gormanston customers connecting to these services by rail
- Express peak time bus services from Balbriggan, with Bus Éireann accepting rail monthly and annual tickets at off-peak times
- Enhanced 33X and 33D services from Skerries, Rush & Lusk, and Donabate
- Bus shuttle between Donabate and Malahide DART Station, as well as special services for schoolchildren
- Dundalk/Drogheda to Donabate rail service
- Enhanced peak-time rail services between Malahide and Dublin

The Iarnród Éireann spokesperson continued “we have endeavored to provide our customers with the strongest possible alternatives during this disruption, and we thank customers for the patience they have shown and their cooperation with the alternative services. Notwithstanding the positive feedback these arrangements have received, we know customers are anxious for their rail service to resume, and confirmation of the November resumption will be welcome news to thousands of daily commuters.”

Malahide Juvenile Hurling

Bridgefield is the place to be this Saturday 12th Sept and Sunday 13th Sept with Championship matches for St Sylvesters Under 16s and U15s.

On Saturday at 2.30 the newly promoted U16s face a stern test against high flying Na Fianna in the Division 1 quarter Finals.

On Sunday at 11.30 the U15s face Nh. Oliver Plunkett/Eoin Rua in the Championship semi finals. With little between these teams in the league games a hard and close match is expected.

Please come along and support your villages teams. More info at http://www.stsylvesters.ie/

Malahide Ladies Gaelic Football

Congratulations to Sinead Aherne and Niamh McEvoy who were part of the Dublin Ladies Football team (The Jackies) who have reached the All Ireland Final. Sinead scored 1-9 in the semi final win over Monaghan.

There is no rest for them though as they join with our near neighbours Naomh Mearnog to play Na Fianna in the Dublin Ladies Senior Championship Final on Friday 11th September at 20.30 in Parnell Park.

The Ladies All Ireland 7s will again be hosted by Naomh Mearnog and St Sylvesters on the 26th September 09 and a lot of work is being done by the club in having the dressing rooms in Broomfield redecorated for this event.
On All Ireland day itself, St Sylvester’s will be participating in the Gaelic For Mothers match at half time. Team manager Declan Lynch has been working in preparing the team over the last number of weeks.

Your support would be welcome in Croke Park on the day to support the ‘mothers’ and also Sinead Aherne and the Jackies in their quest for All Ireland glory against Cork.

This in turn will be followed by an All Ireland Gaelic For Mothers tournament to be hosted by St Sylvester’s on October 11 with 300 participants expected on the day. We will have a further update in a couple of weeks.

Meanwhile, our Under 14 girls had a hard fought win over Castlenock on Friday night in Broomfield and share top spot with Kilmacud in the Division 1 League.

Broadmeadow Liaison Group meeting 1st September 2009

Hi everyone,

Yesterday our committee met with Liam Meagher Meagher (Project Manager Iarnrod Éireann), Gary Keane (Iarnrod Éireann Community Relations) and Michael Lorigan (Fingal Director of Transportation). There were eight members of our committee in attendance representing Malahide Chamber of Commerce, Malahide Yacht Club, Swords Sailing Club, Sea Scouts, Fingal Sailing School, DMG Sailsports and Malahide Community Forum.

Together we had a very constructive and informative meeting and exchange of opinions. The main points emerging from the meeting were:

· The Bridge was constructed in 1844 and the original wooden bridge replaced in 1860. The bridge was again upgraded in the 1960’s. The concrete piers were built on top of the weir rather than down to the underlying ground. A fissure in the weir allowed water scour the foundations of the piers resulting in the collapse of pier 4.

· Initially it seemed that the restoration of the bridge was the matter at hand but it quickly became clear that the repair of the weir was the priority because faults there were the cause of the incident.

· Firstly, the velocity of the water coming through the weir needed to be reduced to prevent further damage and loss of water from the inner estuary. Five and ten tonne stones were placed in front of the weir and back filled with smaller stones.

· Having stabilised the weir, an access road has been constructed that extends across the weir. At the weir this will not exceed the height of the existing weir and should be complete by today. This should effectively stem further water loss and allow a restoration of water levels on the high tides in the coming days.

· There was a concern that this new structure might raise the water levels and cause flooding on Bissett’s Strand and through the estuary. Iarnrod Éireann undertook to monitor this situation. We realise that there is occasional flooding in this area and the work now taking place will probably not improve that situation.

· It is now planned to rebuild Pier 4 and strengthen the remaining piers with pile driven supports. Work is likely to continue after the bridge is reopened which is expected to happen before Christmas.

· The access road is temporary and will be removed when work is complete, but some of the structure will remain to shore up the weir. We have asked that this does not adversely affect users of the weir, especially canoeists.

· A survey is being undertaken of the entire estuary by Professor Keogh of UCC to study the dynamics of this body of water and to make recommendations that ensure the proper management of the estuary and the protection of wildlife.

· The purpose of this project is to re-establish the Dublin-Belfast line and restore the weir to its original condition. This work does not require planning because it is emergency repair work that adds no new features. Because of this, it is not possible to include any additions such as walkways or sluice gates as part of the project.

We have established a structured communication system with Iarnrod Éireann and will liase with them on a regular basis and inform you of news as it occurs. In the meantime I believe its fair to say that the concerns we had in respect of the weir and the inner estuary have been acknowledged and accepted by all parties.

Best regards

Al

Bridge Collapse at Broadmeadows Estuary, Malahide

At this point in time, many articles and news reports have been published regarding the collapse of the bridge at Broadmeadows Estuary. The Chamber of Commerce in Malahide would like to assure all interested parties that we are keeping abreast of progress and plans for work on the bridge on behalf of the local community, local businesses, clubs and of course the protected wildlife in the surrounding areas.
On Sunday August 23rd a public meeting was held in Malahide Yacht Club and attended by all those affected by, or interested in, the events at the estuary. A liaison group has now been established and is being chaired by Al Ryan, President Malahide Chamber, to ensure the interests of the local community are considered and addressed when works take place on the bridge. More information will be published as it becomes available.

Syls Victorius in Croke Park

St. Sylvesters Malahide U-8 Football team showed the Dubs how to do it, beating Kildare team Johnstownbridge in the Go Games Tournament held at Croke Park on 2nd July. This was a day that the 10 players and their families will never forget, from arriving on the team coach, to togging out in the dressing rooms, running out the tunnel, warming up in front of the Hill and going on to give an exhibition of football on the immaculate surface of Croke Park.

It might have been an early start, leaving Malahide at 7.30am, but the team were wide awake right from the off and had 2-4 on the board before our opponents managed to get out of their own half. Goals from Daniel Stone, David Deneher, Daragh McLoughney, Sean Guidan and Matthew Brenner combined with some great points from Guidan, McLoughney and Jack Boyne stretched our lead coming up to half time and with the defence of Timmy O’Connor, Euan Farquarson, Tom Bennett and Sean Curran not only repelling any danger but counter-attacking with gusto we turned well ahead.

The second half brought a downpour and with the rain, the hot humid conditions and the fact that both teams were not used to 20 minute halves, scores were at a premium. However what scores that came were magnificent with Euan, Timmy, David and Sean Guidan all raising flags. While it was pleasing to see the scores going over it was great to see the blocking, harrying and hassling that never allowed our opponents settle. READ MORE...

Minke whale sighted and photographed off Irelands Eye

From IWDG website: Whale sightings of any species off the Dublin coast are rare events. To photograph one from land is exceptional.

On 25th May we received a report of a sighting of a whale off Ireland's Eye, Co. Dublin on Sunday between 12:00-13:30 from Eamon Mc Grattan. Along with his report was an image taken from the boat on which Eamon was angling. The image (above) which showed only the dorsal fin caused some debate on the thorny issue of species ID. Eamon reported it as either a minke or Northern bottlenose whale, and given the evidence it wasn't possible to be certain whether this was a small whale or a large dolphin, like a bottlenose. So the sighting was downgraded accordingly, as there was considerable doubt as to its species.

There was a nice twist in the story when last night 25/05/09 we received a 2nd sighting from the immediate area. This 2nd sighting was by Ray Kellett, a birder from Howth Head, who luckily happened to have an 800mm DSLR equivilent lens with him and managed to obtain a sequence of three images, which this time showed more of the animal's body. This encounter was at 7:30am, and given that both sightings are from the same location, on same morning and both suggest strongly a small-medium sized whale species, we are confident both Eamon and Ray photographed the same whale, which we believe to be a minke whale.

This is a wonderful development and is only the third sighting of a minke whale off Howth Head, and is certainly the only time a whale of any species has been captured on camera from land on the east coast. This sighting is in keeping with sightings data from IWDG monthly ferry surveys in previous years which shows that minke whales can be recorded further offshore, from places like Rockabill and Kish lighthouse.

This is further proof that Whale Watchers should never assume that places like the Irish South and southwest have a monopoly on whale sightings. If you'd like to know more about the Minke whale, which is Ireland's smallest and commonly frequently reported baleen whale click on the following species profile link on http://www.iwdg.ie/species_profiles.asp?speciesID=2105

Images from both encounters are viewable on http://www.iwdg.ie/, lead article

The addition of this minke whale sighting brings to four, the number of cetcaean species which have been recorded off the Dublin/Wicklow area in recent weeks.

A huge thanks to Ray Kellett and Eamon McGrattan for taking the time to report their sightings and photographs to IWDG.
